A BUGATTI motorsport pioneer today celebrates its centenary. Exactly 100 years ago the Type 32 ‘Tank’ – instantly recognizable with its streamlined idiosyncratic shape – made its debut and sole racing appearance at the French Grand Prix in the city of Tours.

Its slipstreamed body was the result of BUGATTI’s assumption that advanced aerodynamics would play an increasingly important role in enhancing the performance of racing cars. And although the Type 32 definitely attracted the crowd’s attention, Ettore Bugatti did not further develop it and threw all his attention into the Type 35. Time was simply not ripe for such progressive aerodynamic body shapes.

In total, only five Type 32 ‘Tank’ were built – a prototype plus the four cars which took part in the Tours Grand Prix. The only Type 32 ‘Tank’ in existence today rests at Musée national de l’automobile, Mulhouse, and can still be seen competing in action at certain historic races.
