For more than 70 years the world’s finest and most exquisite collectors’ cars gather on the iconic 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links, ready to compete as ‘Best of Class‘ and – as apex – ‘Best of Show’.
This year the 72th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance had set up an own class for the greatest French Grand Tourer of the past century, the BUGATTI Type 57. Originally offered in four factory coachwork styles (Galibier, Ventoux, Stelvio, Atalante), the Type 57 chassis soon became available to outside coachbuilders for bespoke coachwork and the most prestigious coachbuilders from all across Europe offered and built some of the most impressive designs ever created.
A selection of them could be marveled at on the lawn with masterpieces bodied by Gangloff, Corsica and Vanvooren, a 1934 Franay Cabriolet, one of just four BUGATTI models ever to be finished by the Parisian coachworks, and two factory-built 1937 Atalante models. In Class K, Bugatti Type 57, the 1st prize was awarded to the 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante from Switzerland.
The 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante from Hong Kong and the 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Corsica Open Sports from Rocester, United Kingdom were being named ‘Most Elegant Closed Car’ and ‘Most Elegant Open Car’ at the event. “The French Cup” Award went to the 1927 Bugatti Type 38/49 Figoni Cabriolet.
